Rise is a community center and farmers market that doubles as an emergency shelter, located in a hurricane zone in Far Rockaway. The intent of the building is to be open and welcoming to the community while also feeling safe and sheltered from a potential hurricane.
This duality between reaching outwards and projecting inward is what inspired the formal massing which climbs from the ground and cantilevers off into the sky.
The building connects directly to and engages with the landscape, gradually becoming larger until it cantilevers out, gesturing to the greater community and ocean beyond.
Within this cantilevered volume we have placed a greenhouse, a place for the community to come together and also a source of food for the shelter.
