The Mixed Media Cinema is a tower in Manhattan that consists of public cinemas and private office/ production spaces. The concept is formed around the cinematic use of the seen vs. unseen which translates into the public and private zones of the building.
The concept was first implemented as a smaller “bar” building as seen in the experimental drawing and model, then was shifted into a tower typology. I used the surrounding neighborhoods of the site to provide context for levels of privacy within the building. Through apertures and materiality (changing levels of opacity and reflectivity), contrasts and dualities of what is seen from both the outside and inside of the building are pushed, framing specific moments and hiding others.
The private and public spaces interact with each other in many ways. Formally they both direct each other at different moments. The volumes of private spaces intrude into public spaces, changing the atmospheres of the room and allowing one to look onto the other and vice versa.
